Have fun, make money, make a difference!

At a recent seminar I attended, the speaker said that he believed he had narrowed down the important things in life to three items. He said that if we were having fun, enjoying what we were doing and not hurting anyone, and if what we were doing was legal and honest; if we were generating income in order to pay our bills and be responsible for our financial obligations; and if we were making a difference in our world, making it a better place; then we should have a good life!

Whenever I hear something like that, I always like to think about it for a few days to see how it processes through all of my filters. Having had several weeks to think about it, I believe that he is correct.

As far as fun goes, all of us get up in the morning hoping that the day will be enjoyable. We certainly do not get up hoping that it will be full of misery and despair! I am not saying that we should be silly or irresponsible, but it does help the day to be better when there is some enjoyment in what we are doing.

As for making money, I believe Zig Ziglar was the one who summed it up best when he said, “Money is not everything - but it is pretty close to oxygen.” That is the truth! The subject of money is going to come up almost every hour of the day. Someone wisely noted that there is a “money meter” constantly running in our lives. It is the meter that tabulates a house payment or rent, utilities, insurance, taxes, a car payment, etc., etc. I do not believe we should worship money or that it should be the most important thing in our lives. However, the issue of money will come up many times every day. So, it is important to be responsible and to be able to generate enough income to pay for your own way through life.

And lastly, I believe everyone who is reading this Tip is the kind of person who wants to make a difference. I have discovered that the kinds of people that I meet and associate with are “difference makers.” They do not just stumble through life doing nothing. They really do want to make a difference in their own lives, in the lives of their family and friends, and in the future of the world.

Years ago I heard someone say, “When I die, I want to leave the world a little better than I found it.” I think that is a healthy attitude to have. I know we cannot control anyone else or fix anyone, but perhaps we can do things that will make a difference in the lives of the people we know, love and care about.

Those three issues may not be all there is to life, but I believe that they are three important, wonderful concepts that each one of us should take the time to consider.
